The times and venue for the 2018 Statewide Cup Finals has been determined, with three of the finals to be played at KGV on the traditional date of the Queen’s Birthday public holiday; Monday June 11.
Starting the day will be the Statewide Women’s final between Taroona and Kingborough at 11:30am, before the Lakoseljac Cup Final between South Hobart and Devonport kicks off at 2:00pm. The day will then end with the Statewide Vase between Olympia and University at 4:30pm. The Statewide Under 20’s Final will retain its Friday night slot after a successful trial in that slot in 2017.
FFT Competitions Manager Glen McNeill said the schedule struck the right balance and that KGV was the obvious choice to hold the finals.
“With the Semi Final results going the way they did and with 7 of the 8 finalists based in the South, it simply wouldn’t make sense to make that move away from KGV this year.
“We’ve carved out a nice space in the market by playing on the Monday, it has less competition to go up against being a public holiday, so it maximizes the amount of eyes we can get on the biggest day on the Tasmanian Football Calendar.”
McNeill added that the decision to play the 20’s on the Friday night was due to multiple factors.
“With the 4 games, that is potentially 10 hours of football which is probably too long of a day for the punters. As such we trialed the Under 20’s playing on the Friday night last season and it was a huge success. It drew a strong crowd and it was one of the most watched live stream games of the season. It really helped bring some prominence to the best young players in the state by giving them that prime time slot and we look forward to another great final between South and Olympia in 2018.”
